The article analyses some astonishing estimates that are based on the authors' research using India’s periodic labour force survey (PLFS) data. The estimates show that the employment-to-population ratio among young adults in India has declined to 43.4% in 2018-19 from 63% in 2004-05. This is a sharper fall than the decline to 64% from 74.5% for the 30-59-years age group over the same period.
