Events
The theme this year was Ancient Games. The events that were spread over the two days were as follows:
Tourada – The Finance Paper Presentation
Tourada is Portuguese for bull fight and is practiced today in a few European and Latin American countries. It involves professional performers called matadors who execute various formal moves with the goal of appearing graceful and confident, while masterful over the bull itself. The charging bull with blaring nostrils, sharp horns, froth emitting mouth, the raw power – all suggestive that one wrong move and you will bleed to death.
The game had three stages. Papers were invited for one of six topics:
- Are private equities destroyers of businesses?
- Candlesticks defy logic and economic sense.
- Business in the age of increasing risk and diminishing returns.
- Impacts of Chinese devaluation of Yuan on the Indian trade.
- When Credit markets and Capital markets meet.
- Advanced restructuring packages for companies in financial distress.
In the first stage, executive summaries for the paper were submitted. Shortlisted teams were invited to send in their detailed papers and the final six descended onto L’attitude 13°05` for the presentation.
Pankration: The Marketing Challenge:
Anticipate moves, react fast, hit hard. Rules are meant to be broken and winning is all that matters. That is Pankration; a Greek sport which means “all powers” or “all powerful”. It’s a brutal hand to hand combat introduced during the ancient Olympics and a fusion of wrestling and boxing. A match was won by submission of the opponent or if the opponent was incapacitated.
This game had two stages of competition. The first stage involved solving a real life case problem and the final six teams were invited to L’attitude 13°05` for the second round.
Pentathlon: The B-Plan Contest:
Pentathlon is the Greek word for “five competitions”. In ancient Olympics, it was the most prestigious event and the winner was considered champion of the games. Pentathletes were considered to be among the most skilled athletes, and their training was often part of military service- each of the five events was thought to be useful in battle
The Theme of the Game was “Inclusive Enterprise - to bridge the digital divide between the urban/rural, rich/poor.”
Similar to Tourada, Pentathlon was conducted in three stages: Executive summary, Full B-Plan and Final Presentation.
Nabataean: The Strategy Game:
Imagine waking up in a city etched with Board games all over where survival hinges upon the capacity of your mind to churn-out strategies, for if you don’t you meet your doom. Petra, the heart of kingdom of Nabataea, was a city where Board games demanded the best strategic brains to tussle till victory prevailed. Nabataeans, “ The Masters of the desert” as they were venerated by ancient history, imbibed Strategy into every walk of their lives and were considered the best decision makers of their times. Strategy inspires people to live life as if it were impossible to fail.
Similar to the Pankration, Nabataean was conducted in two stages. Comprehensive business strategy for a live problem was key to survival in this game.
Funambulism: The HR Game:
Funambulism is the art of walking a tight rope at a great height and Funambulists or Rope walkers sometimes carry a balancing pole. Funambulists walk on tight-wires, high-wires or slack-wires by positioning their center of mass directly over their base of support. In most cases rope walkers perform without safety nets.
The HR Game was a mix of solving case studies, role plays and presentations. It provided an opportunity for future HR Managers to face live situations and judge themselves on their responses.
That’s the Way: Corporate Event
We learn more from our failures than from our successes. What lessons could we learn, we wondered, from products that did not hold up well in the marketplace? Motivated by this idea we came up with “Thats The Way”. It is not just about telling what went wrong, rather it is about doing it right. The corporate get to re-launch the products that failed in the market place.
A truly unique event where corporate teams battled each other to re-launch failed products.
A rich prize awaited all contestants with winning teams garnering Rs. 30000 and runners up Rs. 15000. Business School teams from the IIMs, ISB and other top schools of the country were present to take part in the events.
