Sanghamitra is an intra college cultural and sports event that gives the students a platform to showcase their talents. There was competition, fun and action as everyone got geared up to cheer their teams. A range of games – Table Tennis, Chess, Throw ball, Basket ball, Kho Kho , Badminton, Cricket, Volleyball etc – brought high voltage to the campus , a much needed spirit before the exams kick in again. Section H2 came out as the winners of the series by winning the team events of Cricket, Volleyball, and H4 followed them as the runners’ up by winning the team event of Basketball, Throw ball.

The Finale evening reached its zenith with singing, dance programs, fashion show and a rock band performance. There was entertainment, creativity and humour in the mad ads event. The DJ party and sumptuous dinner extended the verve. It is memories like these – being with our friends, egging them on to go the extra mile in a sport, commenting alongside them on a cricket match, getting them energy drinks as they sweat it out, applauding song and dance performances, in short, indulging ourselves to glory – we would remember, long after we pass out and perhaps, meet each other sometime. For these are rare moments, coming as they are, when they are much needed, bringing fun, joy and laughter in their wake. As the axiom goes, happiness vanishes the moment we realize we are happy. When we get occasions like these to indulge so much that we forget we are happy, we better prolong them.

Another day at Great Lakes comes to an end, I wonder how much action happens here in a day, how much talent resides in our campus, indeed, I can hear someone say it again – “The action has just begun

Sangamitra 2009

The first edition of the internal cultural festival – Sangamitra was organized on the 3rd of September. This was the first fest at the new campus on the outskirts of Chennai and everyone was looking forward to it. Despite the rains that decided to strategically come down a few mintues before the start of the programme, people were still upbeat and optimistic that it was a passing shower. And that’s what it was.

The first performance for the day was from the school children of our Karma Yoga Project who were invited to come and deliver the invocation song. The students from the school were in awe of the numbers in the audience and the college amphitheater itself.

Next, we had a rendition of a college anthem composed and written in tamil by our own students.

Uncle Bala was his usual exuberant self and was really happy at the preparations done in such a short time and shared a song with everyone and was delighted to be present at the function.

The day progressed with dances such as Bhangra, Garba, free-style and even Salsa. As always, the dances were lively, and had the audience cheering for the performers who dazzled us with their moves on stage.

The students had also put up a hilarious play which was based on the Mahabharata, but that was where the similarity ended. The second play of the day, which was a tribute to all the fine professors and staff who have helped the students, was hilarious to the point where even some of the staffs present were in splits. It was all tasteful and in good humour.

The highlight of the evening was the mime performance by our very own students that had the audience amazed as to the hidden-talent amongst us.

The programme culminated with the debut performance of the Great Lakes Institute of Management rock band, ”The Straight F’s” who energized the crowd with classic rock songs and left the audience wanting more.

The rest of the evening was spent burning up the dance floor, music provided by a DJ from Chennai. At the end of it all, the students went back very contented at the great show put up by their fellow students and are eagerly awaiting the second edition, to be held early next year.

Sangamitra 2008

Sangamithra is the bi-annual cultural event of Great Lakes Institute of Management. As the name suggests, this event is about having fun with friends. This year, Sangamithra-I happened on August 30th, Saturday at Green Meadow Resorts. This event is organized by the students to showcase their talent and enrapture the audience with the contents and diversity of their performances. A wide variety of programs including Indian Classical/contemporary/folk/western dances, music show by the Great lakes Band, Skit , mimicry etc. were lined up for the much awaited evening.

The evening was opened with an invocation song and Uncle Bala’s encouraging words to the students. Then came the music show which successfully set the mood for the evening. The audience sang along the foot tapping numbers.

Ridhima and group then gave an enthralling performance of contemporary, semi classical and folk dance. This was followed by the skit directed by Vijay and Group which kept the audience in splits for a good 20 minutes.

Next up was the energy packed dance performance by Ashwin and Group and Sathish and Group. They made sure that the audience did not lose their enthusiasm for the evening.

Uncle Bala true to his spirit sang “Kannae Kalaimaane” and dedicated the same to Great Lakes. It was an emotional moment for all.

Finally there was a salsa/jive performance by Reshma and Group. The evening ended with an amazing video on Life @ Great lakes put together by Vinod Rajan and Guru Prasanna M.

This event is very special for each student as it combines the Indian culture of dance and music with the Great Lakes culture of friendship and harmony in diversity.

Sangamitra 2007

Sangamithra happened on Saturday 28th July 2007 @ MGM Resort on East Coast Road, Chennai. A lush green, open aired area played the host to the event. With clouds looming there was a chance that rain may play spoilsport but thankfully they stayed away until after the event.

Nalli Silks was the main sponsor for the event. A stunning backdrop was prepared for the stage. The backdrop had photographs of all the 165 Jaycees along with photos of Uncle Bala, Prof Sriram and all other senior faculty members.

The Chief guest for the evening was PadmaShri Shri. Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetti.

The event kicked off at 6pm with music from the Great Lakes Band. They managed to keep the audience engrossed with foot-tapping Hindi and English numbers. Then we had a small video about Life @ Great Lakes which was shown to the audience. Prof Sriram then welcomed the gathering. Uncle Bala then spoke and as usual we were enthralled to hear him. Our Chief Guest then spoke on his experiences with Uncle Bala and Great Lakes. Prof Murthy then provided the vote of thanks.

The festivities of the evening resumed with the first of many dances. Archana and group provided an enthralling display of contemporary fusion including Classical Dance and Kalaripayattu for the song “Taye Yashoda”. Then we had a totally fun filled dance by Arunachalam and Group for the song “Saroja”. It was a totally fast paced number and had the audience dancing with them. Then Sudhir, Vaibhaw and Rashmi provided a dance which was quite well done. What made this dance even better was that Vaibhaw and Sudhir both had broken hands to worry about.

Then cameth the skit. A 20 minute performance titled “Munnabhai MBA” had the audience rolling in laughter. Brilliant performances and amazing voice overs were the hallmark of the skit. The directors Sunil, Suraj and Dharmesh deserved the huge applause that they got. Abhishek Rai then got into the groove with some awesome mimicry performances.

Finally came the dance that everyone wanted to see. Arunachalam and Sudha with a Michael Jackson Medley truly capped an amazing night for all.
