International Entrepreneurship Conference

IEC 2012
Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai, India
Announces

The Fourth International Entrepreneurship Conference, 2012 on

"Making Social Enterprises Work"

On Friday, February 3, 2012

The 4th International Entrepreneurship Conference, being organized by the Great Lakes Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) in collaboration with Social Committee, will have 'Making Social Enterprises Work' As its theme this year.

A Social Enterprise is an organization that applies Business Strategies for achieving public good and enhancing quality of life of the society at large.

In India, a Social Enterprise is largely an NGO which is registered either as a society, a trust or a section 25 company (not-for-profit). India has around 3.3 million NGO's which however includes a large number of religious institutions (26.5 %). Effectively we have around 2.4 million Social Enterprises as of 2008 in India barring the religious institutions.

Mainly because of the stated not-for-profit character, the Indian mind automatically equates a Social Enterprise to an NGO (not-for-profit). However in the final reckoning, a social enterprise can, and, perhaps should, have profits - as the minimum condition, instead of as an end objective.

Hence, a Social Enterprise can be 'for' or 'not for' profit.

Though we have a staggering number of Social Enterprises on paper, it is not clear how much is their cumulative impact to be. So the need of the hour is to understand how to make every SE work effectively

This one-day conference focuses on this important area, across three dimensions - Evangelizing, Educating, & Enabling.

It will have the following highlights:
  1. The inauguration of the

    IEC 2012
which shall emulate the Social Enterprise Initiative of the Harvard Business School as a desirable benchmark. Given the prodigious amount of achievements of the HBS SEI over the last two decades, it makes for an ideal example for the GLSEM.

This is made more appropriate because of the fortuitous goodwill and relationship that Great Lakes enjoys with Professor Dr V. Kasturi Rangan, Co-Chair of the Harvard Social Enterprise Initiative - as a well-wisher, guide and mentor - through our Founder, Chairman and Dean Dr Bala..

Aptly therefore the International Entrepreneurship Conference shall have the GL-SEM inaugurated by Dr V. Kasturi Rangan on video-conference mode.

GL-SEM will have a Charter to apply innovative business practices and managerial disciplines to drive sustained, high-impact social change. It will draw from the various programmes already in the school, such as the Karma Yoga initiative, and Orchid Pharma Center for Technopreneurship & Innovation (OPCET), through which Great Lakes is already dedicated towards social causes.

  2. The conference will deliberate on the 'Best Social Enterprises' that have worked and have delivered enormous social value anywhere in the world, as an approach to answer the question raised by the conference theme. Towards this we shall have practitioners and researchers to come and share insights and details of the Best Practices that these SEs have evolved and perfected. The conference will have eminent speakers such as Mr. Madhusudan Menon (Chairman, Micro Housing Finance Corpn Ltd), Mr. Vishal Bharat(Director Investments, Caspian Advisors Private Limited), Mr. Padmanaban, Aparajita Foundations - Thalir Thiran Thittam - an AV presentation and Dr Kalpana Sankar (MD, Hand in Hand)

  3. This year will see the introduction of the novel concept of an "Unconference" session post lunch. An Unconference is a participant driven meeting without the rigidness of a structured, conventional conference. The unconference format is based on the premise that in any gathering the people in the audience - not just those selected to speak on stage - have interesting thoughts, insights and expertise to share. The event would be steered/ facilitated by Mr. Pravin Shekar and would be broadly structured around "Social Enterprises and Entrepreneurship".

Entrepreneurship Development

Entrepreneurship Development Forum at Great Lakes presents
The intellectually stimulating, socially responsible and
financially rewarding

2nd International Entrepreneurship Conference on

?Incubating Innovation & Entrepreneurship?

The Great Lakes International Entrepreneurship Conference encourages all ideas about inspiring, nurturing, supporting and ultimately incubating the Entrepreneurship in India and abroad. This involves the innovations, idea prototyping and eco-system creation for the budding entrepreneurs which may help them to attain their goals easier and faster. The conference will encompass the outlook of academicians and industrialists to present pros and cons of the present Indian Entrepreneurship platform.

The theme of Conference is encouraged from the foundation of i-Lab, an initiative of Great Lakes Entrepreneurship Development Forum to be launched on the same day, to create the missing link of Entrepreneurship. i-Lab will provide a unique platform for the idea & dressing it up into a Start firm through Business modeling. A business model describes the rationale of how organization creates, delivers, and captures value. The term business model is thus used for a broad range of informal and formal descriptions to represent core aspects of a business, including purpose, offerings, strategies, infrastructure, organizational structures, trading practices, and operational processes and policies. It is the building block for any startup firm and getting the model right for the startup is crucial. Surprisingly 99 percent of the firms have no clear framework for describing their model. i-lab will create this missing link through channelizing the ideation and business modeling process for budding entrepreneur to pave the way for success easier and faster.

The conference will address the theme in holistic manner by bringing together thought leaders from academia and real entrepreneurial ecosystem. It provides a platform to exchange and share the knowledge among the various entrepreneurial ecosystem players like entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs, academic researchers, entrepreneurial professionals. The conference would comprise of keynote addresses, panel discussions and academic thought sharing presentations. Keynote speakers and members of panel discussions include faculty from famous business schools, renowned entrepreneurs, policy makers, VCs and angel investors.
