Introduction

Yale - Great Lakes Center for Management Research

Great Lakes Institute of Management has been bringing the best brains in the world of management to India with an objective to provide world class management education.

We have tie-ups with eminent universities of international repute. One such initiative is Yale-Great Lakes Center for Management Research, started in partnership with Yale University of USA. This center aims to promote, facilitate and advance India-centric management related research which contributes to the development of basic and applied knowledge in the field of management. The center will be a bridge that links scholars around the globe with India as a common interest.

Some definitive steps towards this objective include inclusion of greater research component in the post graduate program through an empirical study; promoting collaborative research among students in association with other universities; publishing Great Lakes Herald, a journal in the area of management; organizing an international annual research conference and strengthening of research environment and infrastructure.

Empirical Study

By way of better achieving the institute’s mission of creating business ready managers, an empirical study requirement has been introduced as part of our PGPM starting May 2007.

All coordination with respect to this empirical study will be handled by the Yale-Great Lakes Center for Management Research (referred to as Yale Center henceforth).

This empirical study will be a group project of two students done jointly. It will span the entire year and will count as six credits (equivalent to two 3-credit courses), and will require not less than 160 hours of input per student.

The expected outcome of the empirical study is a paper coauthored by the students with their faculty guides, to be submitted to a refereed journal or conference.

Great Lakes Herald

Editorial Mission

Editorial Mission of the Great Lakes Herald

"Great Lakes Herald" is a half-yearly journal of the Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai, India. The mission of "Great Lakes Herald" is to present new evidence that describes the world of management and business and translate research findings on important issues concerning management and business for non-specialists. It aims to publish articles that rely on research evidence as opposed to opinion for their arguments.

The journal publishes empirical research that tests, extends, or builds management theory and contributes to management practice. All empirical methods -- including, but not limited to, qualitative, quantitative, field, laboratory, case study, meta-analytic, and combination methods -- are welcome. To be published in "Great Lakes Herald," a manuscript must make strong empirical and theoretical contributions and highlight the significance of those contributions to the management field. Thus, preference is given to submissions that test, extend or build strong theoretical frameworks while empirically examining issues with high importance for management theory and practice. The journal is not tied to any particular discipline, level of analysis, or national context.

Karma-Yoga

"Karma-Yoga is the attaining through unselfish work of that freedom which is the goal of all human nature"

(Swami Vivekananda, Complete Works, Vol. 1, p. 110)

At Great Lakes we believe in Karma-Yoga philosophy, where human actions are not driven by greed, but by the ideals of selfless duty. Great Lakes Institute of Management incorporates ‘Project Karma-Yoga’ as an integral part of its Post-Graduate Program in Management (PGPM) curriculum, which aims at nurturing future managers with sharp business acumen and nobler values. All the PGPM students are required to do the Karma-Yoga project for the first five months; the project is optional for interested students for the last seven months.

Karma-Yoga project is a unique medium for students to connect with ground realities and play their role in bringing a positive change in the scheme of things. Our vision is to create a rewarding and sustainable relationship between business and society through Karma-Yoga.

A student driven Karma-Yoga Committee guided by Dr. Venkat R. Krishnan (Director, Yale-Great Lakes Center for Management Research) is coordinating the efforts of PGPM students in 30 nearby villages. Students carry out comprehensive activities like educational assistance, career counselling, business consultation (to self-help groups), waste and water resource management, rain water harvesting and health awareness. (For more information, visit http://glakeskarmayoga.wordpress.com/)

The purpose of Karma-Yoga project is to make students aware of their social responsibilities and to channel their energies in helping the underprivileged. However in this process, numerous management lessons on constraint optimization, people and resource management, innovation and leadership are learnt, which create strongly beneficial and worthwhile impressions on students and subtly transform their character towards higher ideals on a long-term basis.

Karma-Yoga is an initiative towards “Empowerment through Partnership” and will hopefully make long-lasting impact on the lives of many who get associated with it. The project creates a mutual win-win situation for both the students and the villages. The students understand their responsibility towards the society and the villages get budding managers as volunteers to work for village development. Students get the opportunity to apply in practice what they learn during the one-year PGPM. The project provides an experiential learning of leadership qualities.
